A husband and wife team out of Huntington Beach California have come up with an ingenious idea for a DIY AR15 lower receiver they call the ARMOLD. They have created a silicone mold to allow DIY gun builders to make their own polymer lower receivers. The web site (www.gunmold.com) appears to be under construction and they are not yet selling their molds. What they have done is post videos and pictures of the mold and the process to make a polymer AR15 lower.
It appears that they are using a two part mix and pour polymer agent. Their web site claims that this is a proprietary polymer mix. From the video, it appears that the mold makes a very attractive looking lower receiver. We have contacted the owners of gun mold.com to get an evaluation mold. We plan to do a complete review of the mold and the resulting lower. Here are some of the things we will be evaluating:
- Ease of use
- Ability to adhere to dimension tolerances
- Strength of the materials (both the mold and the polymer in the lower)
- Additional tooling (removing flashing, threading for the buffer tube, etc)
- Service life of the part
- Cost of materials
Of course, we also plan to do some test firing. Stay tuned to see where this goes. We hope to give you a first look at gun mold.com’s ARMOLD. In the mean time, take a look at the video of the ARMOLD in action.
