Silicone mold to make AR15 lower

A husband and wife team out of Huntington Beach California have come up with an ingenious idea for a DIY AR15 lower receiver they call the ARMOLD. They have created a silicone mold to allow DIY gun builders to make their own polymer lower receivers. The web site ( appears to be under construction and they are not yet selling their molds. What they have done is post videos and pictures of the mold and the process to make a polymer AR15 lower.

It appears that they are using a two part mix and pour polymer agent. Their web site claims that this is a proprietary polymer mix. From the video, it appears that the mold makes a very attractive looking lower receiver. We have contacted the owners of gun to get an evaluation mold. We plan to do a complete review of the mold and the resulting lower. Here are some of the things we will be evaluating:

  • Ease of use
  • Ability to adhere to dimension tolerances
  • Strength of the materials (both the mold and the polymer in the lower)
  • Additional tooling (removing flashing, threading for the buffer tube, etc)
  • Service life of the part
  • Cost of materials

Of course, we also plan to do some test firing. Stay tuned to see where this goes. We hope to give you a first look at gun’s ARMOLD. In the mean time, take a look at the video of the ARMOLD in action.
